Much talk surrounds the benefits of mood enhancers such as serotonin and endorphins. These natural enhancers occur in the body to promote feelings of well being.

There has been much talk lately surrounding the topic of feeling better naturally and organically. What better way is there to accomplish this then through natural enhancers that already occur within the body. Through techniques of manipulation and eating certain foods, one can promote feelings of well being and uplift a poor mood. Healthy eating plans can increase these mood enhancers in different ways, while other not so healthy foods also release endorphins and increase serotonin levels in the brain.

Serotonin is a chemical neurotransmitter that occurs within the chemistry of the brain. It is also a synapse that occurs between a nerve and a muscle or the interaction between two nerves.

Sheline M.D who was quoted in the article, "Low serotonin-receptor levels linked to depression,"written by Jim Dryden ,"although it's clear that serotonin is involved in depression, it may be that the volume loss we have observed is due to damage in cells in the hippocampus, which then cannot process serotonin effectively."

Endorphins are also natural mood enhancers that are released within the brain and help with uplifting the mood. There are many different ways to release endorphins with the body the natural way. One is through vigorous physical activity, another way is through healthy eating plans and thirdly, by eating certain foods.

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” This may sound exaggerated, but positive mood within the normal range is an important predictor of health and longevity (Simon).

Techniques used to Manipulate Endorphins and Serotonin

Using techniques to manipulate both of these natural mood enhancers that occur within the body can help a person feel better instantly. This can be done by eating certain types of foods as well as participating in certain activities.

Ways to release endorphins include:

  • physical activity, such as sweating needs to be involved
  • eating spicy foods (the spicier the better)
  • laughing at least a few minutes a day

Ways to increase serotonin include:

  • eating chocolate
  • snacking on nuts and whole grains
  • meditation
  • getting regular sleep
  • drinking milk
  • taking a vitamin B complex
  • exposure to bright light
  • 5HTP-L-tryptophan

According to Mark Foley a D.O. and author of "5HTP: Check Before you swallow", 5-HTP is an amino acid produced by the human body from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan (LT), which is found in dietary proteins. It's clinical value is in it's ability to increase production of serotonin, and it has been use clinically for more than 30 years."

When purchasing this supplement it is of utmost importance to know where it is being processed as well as the store it is being purchased from. Consulting with a physician prior to taking this supplement is also advised because it can interact with a number of different illnesses and medications and cause various side effects.

Once all of the bases are covered and the permission from a practicing physician is authorized then this supplement can be very helpful with increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

By incorporating some of these techniques into the daily living a person can naturally increase serotonin as well as release endorphins within the body. These mood enhancers help promote feelings of well being and aide in mental health. They also help to increase a person's longevity and even predict the overall health of an individual.
