When a loved one is experiencing feelings of suicide it's important to be there for that person and never pass judgment.

Many individuals experience thoughts of suicide at some time in their lives. Feelings of suicide are more common than some people think and it’s important that people understand the illness before passing judgment.

Feelings of Suicide can Happen to Anyone

There is not a certain class of individuals who may or may not have suicidal thoughts. Some of the strongest people we may ever know may be at risk for suicide, such as a doctor, counselor or mother. The onset of depression can happen to anyone and thoughts of suicide could be a symptom.

Suicidal Thoughts can be a Sudden Onset

Someone who has lived a rather healthy lifestyle and has been a cheerful outgoing individual may at some point in his or her life experience sudden feelings of suicide. The two main reasons that an individual becomes depressed, are a traumatic experience in his life and/or loss of control of emotions. This can leave a person feeling as if there is no hope for his future.

Thoughts of Suicide Cause a Feeling of Hopelessness

When an individual is in this type of state of mind, in his eyes, there is no light in a world of darkness. In his mind, he truly sees no future. This sort of deep depression causes a person to view the world around him in such a way that the mind becomes distorted. This often results in sudden suicidal urges.

Take Warning Signs of Suicide Seriously

There is hope for individuals who are experiencing thoughts of suicide. The most important thing for loved ones to realize is; never take warning signs of suicide lightly. When someone hears a friend or loved one express her thoughts of hopelessness or feelings of wanting to kill herself, it’s essential that the person treats this as a serious illness.

This should be treated as though it is a cancer or a deadly disease, for this will take over a person’s body just as any chronic illness would do. It is not a choice, it is a disease. There are treatments that could save her life and it’s sometimes up to family and friends to provide the help a person needs to reach these certain treatments.

Sometimes individuals have to hit rock bottom before they regain hope and in some cases it’s too late. With long term therapy and positive friends and family members who stick by the person’s side, it is possible for him to regain control over hisr life and once again see the light from inside his hole of darkness.

People who have experienced thoughts of suicide come from all walks of life and depression can happen to anyone. Individuals aren’t prepared for some of the tragedies that hit them throughout their life and it is easy to lose control when going through the changes that everyday life may bring. The most important thing to remember is never give up on loved ones, for individuals must not judge those who experience this illness, as just like any other chronic illness this can affect anyone.

Any mention of suicide should be taken quite seriously. Sometimes it seems as though the end of the rope has been reached. Life has just too difficult. It's so important to remember to just be there in a non-judgemental way for anyone who has inclintations in this direction. Family support is important. Unfortunately, suicide among the elderly is becoming more and more of a problem, especially since the economy has been so problematic lately. Families need to monitor their elderly members closely and stay in touch with them. Family traditions, such as birthdays, religious holidays, and routine get togethers can help the elderly stay connected in a meaningful way. In this day of nuclear families, a phone call, a letter, or an email can be valuable ways of keeping in touch. Giving a hug, saying I love you, sending a birthday card are all important ways of maintaining strong family connections to the older generation.
