For many people stiff and sore muscles are a part of waking up every morning. But morning pain has a cause and can often be relieved with a simple lifestyle change.
Fibromyalgia, according to the American College of Rheumatology affects some 3 to 6 million Americans. That translates to 1 in 50, most of them women, who suffer some form of morning stiffness. Arthritis, rheumatism and other joint complications all contribute to the inability to get a good night of sleep. For those who are not affected from joint pain, the reasons for morning discomfort can be attributed to 5 factors: Being OverweightCarrying those extra pounds puts a strain on the back, legs, muscles and joints. The added benefit of losing just a few pounds can lessen the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases and cancer. The heart must supply oxygen to every part of the body, but extra fat requires it to work harder. The resting heart rate is elevated and leads to sleep deprivation. Lack of ActivityThe body is meant to be active every day. Unfortunately, many people simply do not get the exercise they need to stay healthy. A simple act such as walking supplies the oxygen the body and brain needs to function. Walking releases endorphins, the feel-good hormone and helps aid in detoxification which is an important element for good health as the environment, diets and bad habits all contribute to the toxicity in the body. DietThe diet of many people consists mostly of high processed and refined foods that lack essential nutrients, most of which have been stripped away. What nutrition there is is woefully inadequate. Optimum health requires a certain amount of vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately, most people simply do not meet the minimum RDA levels for good health. The body simply cannot fight infection and disease if it does not have the tools to do what is is capable of doing. A poor diet leads to poor posture, weak muscles and bones and chronic fatigue. Poor Sleeping PostureA good sleeping posture is important for a good night's rest. A bad posture contributes to insomnia, stiffness in the joints and poor blood flow. Evidence shows there is a significant rise in lactic acid, a major contributing factor of stiffness. Sleeping on the back constricts airway passages and leads to snoring and sleep apnea. The kind of bed must be considered too as it must be able to support the body and hold it in a comfortable position through the night. Too soft or too hard places a strain on back, shoulders and neck muscles. Living and Working in Cold ClimatesCold, damp environments whether at home or at work affects blood flow through the body and leads to high stress that interferes with sleep. Relaxing under a heated blanket or a good down comforter will help toward a good night of sleep. While fibromyalgia, arthritis and rheumatism are not so easily addressed, something can always be done to insure that morning stiffness doesn't occur. By simply observing the rules for a proper diet, exercise and good sleeping habits, it will be much easier to get out of bed ready for the challenges of another day.
